Arcadia No 1880
Arcadia School opened on 1st of May 1877 with William Cowley Head Teacher. In that year there
were 34 children on the roll but the average attendance was only 19. From 12th of July 1881 to 12th
of November 1883 it was part-time with Arcadia East. The building consisted of a schoolroom to
accommodate 40 children with two rooms attached as living quarters for the teacher. The original
site was on the East side of the Goulburn Valley Highway, 12 miles South of Shepparton in the Shire
of Euroa. The existing site on the South side of the Arcadia-Euroa Rd was suggested by the District
Inspector J. W. Gray and in 1917 the building was shifted to this site and remodelled. Trees that
were planted in 1917—18 still grow in the grounds. Due to good planning and planting of trees and
shrubs, the school won the ANA prize for grounds improvement in 1922. Enrolment rose to 55 in
1924 and the school then had the services of a Head Teacher, a Junior Teacher and a Sewing
Mistress. In 1955 the enrolment dropped to 11 pupils. The existing one-room building was
remodelled in 1917.
