Bunbartha No 2416
On 18th of April 1878 J. McCutchan applied for the establishment of a public school on the village
reserve known as Bunbartha, Parish of Tallygaroopna. Reporting on 16th of July 1878, District
Inspector Craig thought a school not necessary at that stage of settlement. After further petitions, a
site of 2 acres (opposite the Presbyterian Church Reserve) was gazetted on 22nd of July 1881 and the
Department eventually decided to provide a school. A 24ftx15ft room and 6ft wide hall of the
Presbyterian Manse were leased for£15 p.a. and SS2416 Bunbartha opened on 26th of September
1881 with Frank Collins as Head Teacher. In 1883 a wooden portable schoolroom with quarters
attached was erected on the gazetted site at a cost of£194. The new building first came into use on
9th of July 1883.
The schoolroom of 1906, measuring 27ftx15ft was considered too small for 37 children in
attendance. In 1910, the District Inspector recommended that the school building be converted into
a residence and a new school erected. This was deferred, but a new residence was erected in 1911.
In 1922, the partitions between the old residence and the school were removed to make one room
22ftx22ft. In spite of several requests for a new building, the expense could not then be justified, but
renovations were carried out in 1926 and 1930. In 1959, a new Light Timber Construction classroom,
36ft x 24ft, with a central fixed partition, a 7ft corridor and store, was erected for£2,610. A septic tank
system for school and residence was installed in 1959, and SEC power connected in 1963. Theold portable building
of 1883 was sold for removal.
