Byrneside No 1680
Formerly Baldwinsville
This school was originally called Baldwinsville, for William Baldwin, an original commissioner of the
United Echuca and Waranga Waterworks Trust (1882), former councillor of the Waranga Shire, and
prominent in the Rodney Shire separation movement and a first councillor of that Shire (1886).
SS1680 opened on the present site in 1876, with a residence which was in use until 1930. Tynan,
Head Teacher at the turn of the century, was succeeded by Miss Woodman (1920-1929). Attendance
after the first World War fell to 8 pupils, but the 1960s saw a steady increase from 20 in 1960 to 47
in 1969. A permanent woman assistant was appointed in 1965. The new two-room building
completed in 1966 was opened by R McDonald, MLA. The old building was sold.
