Caniambo No 2230
Formerly known as Gowangardie
SS2230 was originally known as Gowangardie. In December 1878 Fowler, Bradshaw, Frederick,
Stockdale, Coleman, Dans, Coffey, Weeks and Rogerson applied for a school.
District Inspector Lewis, reporting on 22nd of April 1879, recommended a 5-acre site (near a well)
at the North-West corner of Block 6. This was gazetted on 30th of April 1880. Pending the erection
of a school building, Gowangardie (later Caniambo) opened in the leased Wesleyan Chapel on 6th of April 1880.
Rent was£5 p.a. Ellen Skinner was Head Teacher. The average attendance for the first month was 13 but by
1881 the Net enrolment reached 35. A portable wooden building with two attached rooms was erected on the
gazetted site for£188 16s and first used in January 1882. By 1889, when net enrolment had increased to 60,
a new building was necessary. A new 28ft x 14ft timber schoolroom was completed by 1890 and the
original portable converted into a residence of four rooms rented for£9 p.a. Moves to change the name
were first made in 1902. Caniambo was at first rejected and Boxshaw was suggested. However, the latter
was not used, the name being changed to Caniambo in 1904. Net Enrolment in 1948 was 6. The school was
still in operation in 1971.
