Cosgrove No 2466

In the district earlier known as Pine Lodge East a school was sought by John Sutherland in 1880 and
opened on 5th of May 1882 on the West side of the Shepparton—Dookie Rd, 3 miles West of Dookie
in the Parish of Pine Lodge, County of Moira. Miss C.M. Wirchell was first HT, enrolling 50 pupils. As
the railroad spur moved East from Shepparton and Pine Lodge to Cosgrove, so the workers’ camps
moved causing a large influx of pupils. Thus in 1885 an empty schoolroom at Toolamba was re-erected
at Cosgrove. W.G. Ballantine was President and J.A. Sutherland Secretary of the first Committee
in 1911 and a new school in 1914 resulted from their efforts. Unfortunately, it was burnt down in 1927,
and the present structure erected. Like many schools in farming areas, Cosgrove has produced many pupils
who sought success or service elsewhere — a Collins St bone specialist, a metropolitan engineer,
a parish priest, a DFC winner are numbered amongst ex-pupils.
