Gillieston No 2275

In 1874, land selectors J. Tavener, J. McKenzie, N. and J. McLeod, J. and R. Reddrop, and H.
Carruthers proposed a school for this area, named for Duncan Gillies, member for Rodney in the
Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1877—89, and earlier a member of the McCulloch ministry. A
building was erected on a block of land donated by Mrs Wordens some 4 miles South of Undera,
where Head Teacher Schaeffer enrolled 45 children in August 1880. In 1905, the school closed for
lack of pupils and the building was moved to SS3548 Wyuna East. In 1913 a new school was erected
on the original site and opened on 11th of November. Head Teacher Elsie Jones enrolled 15 children.
A Committee was formed with T. Lee as President and G. Reddrop as Correspondent. In 1927 the
school was remodelled and enlarged, but closed again in 1943 for want of pupils. It reopened on
21st of June 1950 with V. Stafford as Head Teacher and 11 pupils. In 1964 a new building, which
replaced the old structure, was opened by R.S. McDonald, MLA.
