Gowrie Street Primary School No 4657
(formerly Shepparton North)
First known as Shepparton North, this school was made necessary by the economic growth of the
City of Shepparton. To cope with overcrowding at Fryers Street School a new school of four Bristol
classrooms and 140 pupils was established on the Fairley Estate on 6th of February 1951 with Miss
M. Green as acting Head Teacher. Six more classrooms were added in 1952, and R. Spurr had an
enrolment of 450. In 1953 E.P. Seymour took charge of 470 pupils taught by 10 teachers. With an
ever-increasing population from 1954—58 temporary accommodation had to be used at the closed
SS3264 Shepparton Park and in the Methodist Sunday School.
From 1958 Light Timber Construction classrooms were added reaching a total of 19 by 1969 to
accommodate 780 pupils. Since the school’s establishment the 10 acre site has been extensively
developed to provide lawn and garden areas, a sports oval complete with a watering system and
scoreboard, decorative shade trees and assembly hall, a shelter pavilion for infant pupils and a
central library. The first Committee of 1951 led by President C.H. Whitfield and Correspondent M.S.
Lamb has been succeeded by further active committees.
