Merrigum Primary School No 1874
First proposed by James Andrews, school began in the Methodist Chapel leased in August 1877. First
Head Teacher William S. Pearce enrolled 34 pupils. Pearce was still Head Teacher with 37 pupils
when the first single room (24ftx16ft), with three-room residence attached, was built on Allotment
81, Parish of Kyabram East, County of Rodney, in November 1886. The new school was built on a site
near the Merrigum Railway Station in August 1915 when, with increased closer settlement, the
enrolment had reached 52 with Head Teacher Alexander Moncur.
The first School Committee had been formed on 13th of April 1911 with James Duguid as Secretary.
At one stage the school was known as Merrigum North, to distinguish it from now closed 2971
Merrigum South. Former Head Teacher Victor S. McDougall became an Inspector of Schools.
