Merrigum South No 2971
This school in the Parish of Girgarre East, County of Rodney, about 15 miles from Kyabram,
opened under Margaret Baillie (1889—91) on 7th of October 1889. The school was unstaffed
in August 1908 and closed on 31st of December 1910, parents apparently preferring to send
their children to SS1874 Merrigum, a better-equipped and larger school.
Outstanding among the Head Teachers of the school was Mary Elliott (1894-1902) who formed,
and was first Secretary of, a Merrigum and District Mutual Improvement Society, and also formed
a Reading Circle in the district. Miss Elliott also conducted successful school concerts including
production of operettas. Parents presented her with a handsome writing desk, in appreciation of
her efforts, in July 1898.
