Mooroopna Primary School No 1432
Situated in the Parish of Mooroopna, County and Shire of Rodney, the first formal education in the
area was given by William Crimp in a selector’s hut 14 miles W of the present school. This private,
three days a week school opened on 3rd of March 1873, pupils paying 6d a day. Two acres of land on
the main Echuca Rd were then given by Archer, and local people erected a building 24ftxl2ft
constructed of sawn hardwood, including the roof. Crimp opened this school on 20th of July 1874.
Within two years the building became unsatisfactory, being too small, with roof and walls leaking. A
slate-roof brick building of three classrooms was built by John Mills for£357 14s and occupied on
30th of March 1877. An additional brick classroom, office and lobby were added in 1929 to
accommodate an enrolment of 216. In 1947 a wooden school was moved from 3561 Wyuna South;
this and the original brick building were still in use in 1971. Extra land was purchased in 1952 to
extend the playing area. In 1954 enrolment stood at 315; and two ETC classrooms were built: two
more were built in 1958 when enrolment had increased to 353. In 1963, alterations to the original
building were made and two more LTC rooms added. Sir Ian McLennan, KBE, managing director of
BHP, was an ex-pupil.
