A new museum with an historic old face.
In 1973 the grand old 1882 Shepparton Post Office was demolished, a decision by the PMG (Post Master General's Department).
The intention was to rebuild it, possibly at the International Village. It never happened. Many in the community have never forgotten (or forgiven) and hoped it would happen one day.
Two years ago a small group of volunteers at the Shepparton Heritage Centre discussed the possibility of rebuilding it on the Heritage Centre site, by removing the 1980s weatherboard cottage (built in 1995 as a replica of an old building on the site). The new building would include museum spaces, presentation areas, immigration gallery and extra archive/storage space.
Since that time we have had meetings with the Council, (who like our idea), organised more parking at the rear of the Museum and have been meticulously drawing up new plans based on the original plans. We aim to build a new building with the look of the old Post Office, right down to the Clock Tower - we have the Clock!
The new building will have two floors; the first floor will include shop and new museum galleries and part of the second floor will be devoted to immigration - so many families have prospered here and this should be celebrated. In addition there will be a basement that will house our archives of documents and items not on display.
We have many of the original bricks and slate tiles, as well as many of the fittings from the old Post Office.
This project has the potential to get national recognition and put Shepparton on the map. Projects like this rarely happen!
Our goal is to start building by the 50th anniversary of its demolition - 2023.
Many think this project is a foolish idea and will never succeed.
Let's prove them wrong!
Now is the time to raise the funds required for the set-up costs of getting this great project off the ground. The more funds we raise will help us get the grants and sponsorship necessary to complete the project.
Let's make it happen.
