Shepparton East Primary School No 1713

In September 1874 WilliamH. Oram first proposed that a school be built on Allotments 36 or 37,
fronting the Benalla Rd, and opposite the Pine Lodge Store in the Parish of Shepparton, County of
Moira. The South-East corner of Lot 35 was finally chosen and gazetted on 12th of February 1875. After a
long delay through severe floods, a single wooden classroom with attached quarters was opened on
6th of April 1876. John Wilson, with his wife as Work Mistress, came from Merriang Capitation
School 436 to take charge. Initial enrolment was 56 pupils. In January 1878 two rooms were added
to the dwelling at a cost of ₤159. In October 1914 approval was given to spend
£ 427 on remodelling and enlarging the school and residence. By 1924 the school had accommodation
for 75 pupils, and a detached residence of five rooms; between 1914—24 the old school and quarters
had been resited in the schoolground and converted into the residence. After the second World War
enrolment continued to rise and a two-room army hut provided additional accommodation. In 1965,
a modem building of six classrooms, incorporating the existing two rooms, was erected and site works
carried out. From the 1930s the school had maintained a prominent position in Young Farmers Club activities.
The ANA prize was won in 1938 and 1957. A number of ex-pupils will be long remembered for their leadership
in social welfare work and civic affairs, among them Sir John G.B. McDonald, Premier and Treasurer of
Victoria (1950-52).
