Tallygaroopns No 1944
also known as Tallygaroopna South
Also known as Tallygaroopna South, the school opened in a portable building on 1st of September 1877 with
Marion Wilson (1877-78) as first Head Teacher. The site of 2 acres was on the South-East corner of
James Drummond’s selection. Selectors flocked to the area; in 1880 the enrolment amounted to 70 pupils,
and a new wooden building was erected. During the depression of the 1890s the selectors rapidly decamped,
and the school closed in April 1899, when enrolment had fallen to 14. The residence was moved to
SS2563 Shepparton (Congupna Rd) in 1902.
At residents’ expense the school building was moved to SS1469 Shepparton in 1905 where it was fitted as a
model infant room using the then new methods of pupil activity.
