Tallygaroopna Primary School No 3067
The land taken up in 1841 by Edward Khull was subdivided into Katandra and Tallygaroopna
(Aboriginal: big tree). By the 1880s the present township emerged called Coldwelltown after the
major landowner who made the subdivision. Tallygaroopna, 10 miles North of Shepparton serves
an irrigation and agricultural district. Children attended SS2428 Karpool, 2 miles North of Shepparton
but in 1889 J. Rennick and others sought a local school. Coldwell offered the land which is the site of
the present school. Meanwhile on 1st of September 1890 the Department leased Tallygaroopna Hall
for£50 yearly and here Head Teacher Whitfield from Karpool opened the school in 1891. Later the
Karpool building was transferred to Coldwell’s site. In 1891 a plan evolved to make Tallygaroopna a
Central School to which children could be transported by horse and dray from Tallygaroopna South,
Shepparton North, Congupna Rd and Karpool and some children were conveyed in the
Tallygaroopna area. Edith Bignell became Head Teacher in 1895. The first Committee on 7th of June
1911 elected J. Rennick as Chairman and G. Bitcon, Correspondent. The Committee with the help of
District Inspector Johns successfully urged erection of new classrooms; these were opened in 1922.
The Committee has always been very active in the development of the school, in support of the
Young Farmers Club formed in 1935, in fostering war relief work, in supplying equipment and in
originating the School Sports Association with Congupna Rd, Bunbartha, Zeerust, Wunghnu and
Drumanure Schools in 1954. The school has strongly supported Junior Red Cross and Mooroopna
Base Hospital.
