Tamleugh West No 2737
District Inspector Eddy reported on an application for a school at Tamleugh West on 22nd of
June 1885. He advised that a school was necessary for an estimated Average Attendance of
20—30, and chose a site of 2 acres in the North-East corner of Block 72a, Parish of Tamleugh.
This was gazetted on 15th of January 1886. A timber portable building, with teacher’s quarters
of two attached rooms, was erected on this site and Tamleugh West opened on 22nd of May 1886.
Sarah Ware was Head Teacher. Fire totally destroyed the school on 23rd of August 1887.
Until 1st of December 1887, when a new portable building was first used, the school functioned
in a 20ftx12ft bark building leased from McKay for 5s weekly. In 1889 the Net Enrolment was 45.
The school was eventually moved at the beginning of 1896 (by the residents) to a 1-acre site at the
south-east corner of Allotment 31, Parish of Karramomus, County of Moira, bought for £3.
Tamleugh West became part-time with SS2333 Rigg’s Creek on 22nd of February 1933 and was
closed on 7th of November 1934.
